Europe - Croatia

After sleeping up the continent of Africa and complaining about bland free Amsterdam lounge food, we arrived in Zagreb, Croatia! This is the beginning of our month of travel in Europe. We know Croatia is famous for the coastal cities Split and Dubrovinik but we had limited time and chose to go to Plitvice National Park instead. This park contains a cascade of 16 lakes and numerous waterfalls that you can spend an entire day walking through. Here's a quick summary of what we did, some advice if you visit, fun facts, and some of our favorite pictures.

  • Stay at the Westin Zagreb
  • Dinner at Mali Medo in Old Town
  • Bus to Plitvice Lakes
  • Track H starting from Entrance 2 at Plitvice Lakes
  • Bus back to Zagreb
  • Dinner at Zrno Bio Bistro
  • Drink at Mali Medo in Old Town

Things to know if you visit

  • Eat and hang out at Tkalciceva street for that local vibrant feel. That's where Mali Medo was located.
  • A day trip is possible to the national park via bus. It costs about 98 kuna a person and takes 2 hrs from the main bus terminal.
  • Getting dropped off at entrance 2 and doing track H is a solid option for 4-6 hours. You begin at the top of the lakes and work your way down. Meaning you also don't have to climb up as much, making this a stroll and not a hike :)
  • You should have serious walking shoes, according to fitfit we walked over 10 miles just within the park.
  • Bring your own sandwich lunch for the day so you don't have to stand in the long queues for more expensive food
  • This national park will not be a tranquil visit with nature. It can get heavily crowded and since the walking paths are narrow with people stopping to take pictures blocking everyone there is some degree of frustration.
  • You can buy tram tickets on board within Zagreb and they are a great way of getting around. 10 kuna per ride (free transfers for 90 minutes) or 30 kuna for a day pass.

Fun facts

  • Adidas is big here. Just like Ruski villains in Die Hard movies, its cool to be walking around in a full Adidas jumpsuit.
  • Contrary to the first fun fact, fashion is out of control here. Men all seem to be wearing skin tight shirts and have partly shaven heads.
  • Don't be alarmed by the seemingly endless amounts of graffiti and "youth" running around everywhere. The city is quite safe and get's much more of the traditional European cuteness near the Old Town area.

Summary of Pictures

As with every European city you gotta head to a square/old town. This is a main square of Zagreb.

I swear the orange of the building was brighter

Sitting at Mali Medo and realizing that all Thursday nights are the same in the world for young people

Beginning the "walk" at upper lakes

You can't swim in this lake :(

It did feel like the boardwalk was a bit too creaky

And then magical rainbow fish came up to grant us wishes

Caused a huge bottleneck on the path for this shot

Cascadessss

It was great to walk on this and climb up to see it
