Kaua'i - Day 1

Finally, the first "real" post! We had a blast our first day in Kaua'i. Here's a quick summary of our day followed by a video and some of our favorite pictures.

  • Staying at the Sheraton Kaua'i
  • Hiked the Hanapaki'Ai Trail
  • Checked out Tunnels Beach
  • Ate saimen noodles, a local Hawaiian specialty
Things to know if you visit:
  • The Hanapaki'Ai Trail is just the first two miles (one-way) of the Kalalau trail which is a 11 miles hike (one-way) that leads into the Napali Coast. That's for serious hikers only who want to camp out on the beach. You have to bring water purifying tablets and shit, so definitely not very honeymoon-y, but looks totally epic (you'll get pictures of it in the Day 2 post!) Also, be very careful on this trail if its raining... the red clay is super slick... a lady broke her ankle hiking it near us and had to be carried back with extreme difficulty. Lastly, the people reading this and going "hmph, 11 miles, I hike that in my sleep"... its not an easy trail. You cannot hike it round trip in a day.
  • Tunnels Beach is sweet. There's not much parking around it but you can get to it from Haena Beach.

Fun facts:

  • Hitchhikers are everywhere on the island... damn hippies.
  • You could be walking to Walmart and hear a rooster crow because chickens are everywhere on the island roaming around. Mohit is obsessed at wondering if he can run and catch one.
  • Being at Walmart was strangely comforting because it was a touch of mainland to hold on to before moving on.
  • Not a fun fact exactly, milk was near $7.00!
  • Locals like to modify their trucks and raise them high. Since we're from Atlanta we wish they'd modify the rims and mufflers.

Northern part of the island

Driving to the hike, we couldn't get over the scenery

Glimpse of the NaPali coast

Getting adventurous

The green moss really added to my shutter happiness
We've seen people do this in Utah too!

It was a very muddy hike

Muddy and steep, no other way to honeymoon

Mountains and ocean is the ideal combo

No, this is not Asia

Stopped off the road for this view!

Proof of that Walmart fun fact

Zzzz we thought it was dead at first!
