Kaua'i Day 5 - Last Day in Hawaii

The last in day in Kaua'i... Although we're pretty sad to leave Kaua'i early tomorrow morning, we are so glad we chose this as our first stop. The island is a perfect mix of chill, adventure, beach, mountains, and low touristy level yet ease of access/travel. Definitely recommend visiting for a romantic get away but not for a "bro-trip" of partying, although we did see a few groups :)

Quick request: Since this is our first blog, we'd love your feedback. If you could post a comment with anything you like, anything you could do without, and any suggestions for other things to include, we'd love to hear it.

Day 5 in Kaua'i has another cloudy start but ended up being good easy day. Here's a quick summary of the day, followed by a video and some of our favorite pictures.
  • Kilauea Lighthouse
  • Hanalei Bay
  • Lumahai Beach
  • Beach at the Sheraton

Things to know if you visit

  • Kilauea Lighthouse is open Tuesday through Saturday. You can see the viewpoint from a distance any day of the week but if you want to drive down to the lighthouse and see the wildlife refuge, you have to go between Tue and Sat. We went on a Sunday...
  • Hanalei Bay is a great place for anything but snorkeling. Things like paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and laying at the beach are perfect for this beach. There also seemed to be a lot of more locals here than at the South East beaches like Poipu.
  • There's a total of five "organic" / "natural" stores on the island. Don't ask me to define either of those words but the one in Kapaa, Papaya's Natural Foods, was a good place to get a cold plate to-go with couscous, hummus, tofu, potato salad, etc. for $8.99 per lb.
  • On Sundays a lot of the local food places are closed like some of our favorites, Pho Kauai and Koala Fish Market

Fun facts

  • Locals apparently call Lumahai Beach as Lumadie Beach cause of the dangerous undertow and rip currents. Don't swim there.
  • Swimming in the rivers at Kaua'i is kind of dangerous because the wild chickens and boars run around in them leaving behind leptospirosis causing bacteria... so if you're thinking a romantic kayak ride in the Hanalei river, maybe go sea kayaking in Hanalei Bay instead.
  • The island is very green! There are no plastic bags at grocery stores, hotel rooms have a separate recycling trash can, to go containers are paper and not styrofoam. They really do care about keeping the island environmentally friendly.
  • The island music is a mix of reggae and Hawaiian style. Fun to listen to as you drive along. Also, totally unrelated to Kaua'i, check out the Reggae Shark Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3ytTKZf344).
Mahalo Kaua'i!

Mohit with his fake go-pro strapped to his head, trying to capture the waves of the Sheraton beach... yeah he failed.
Can't get over these drives!

Second visit to this spot!

Pretty accurate!

Sure its a bit cheesy but think of the points Mohit scored after writing this in the sand!
